What is defrag?
When explaining defrag in regards to a computer system, it is best to use the analogy of the human mind. When the mind is young, thoughts move into the mind and out of the mind with ease. Learning and saving vital information comes naturally and there are rarely any troubles in regards to accessing that learned information with great speed and accuracy. As the years progress, the mind takes more and more time to learn and save new information. And, by the time the person has reached their elder years, the process has all but stopped. The computer system is exactly the same way, but on overdrive. It does not take years to fragment the system, it can take only months with extensive usage.
Like the slug who leaves the trail of slime along its path, files leave small bits of information everywhere they go. These small bits of information are bits of file information that are needed in the home file, but are often not essential enough on their own to stop the file or process from working correctly. Over time, these small bits of files start to fill up the routes used by files from the hard drive to the part of the computer where the user can access the file or program. Once these information superhighways are blocked, the computer processing unit, CPU, no matter how strong and quick it may be, will begin to slow down.
The slow down will be minimal at first and the user may not notice the lag in accessing information and saving files. But, the longer the system is left in disrepair, the slower the processes will become and soon the computer could freeze up all together. How do you stop this from happening? Unclog the file routes with a defrag software.
Defrag software allows the computer user to run a street sweeper of sorts through the file routes in the computer. This sweeper will come along and gather up and fragmented pieces of file and return them to the main file where they started. By the end of the process, the routes will be clear and the computer and the programs will run more quickly and with great efficiency.
Defrag software will need to be run at different intervals based upon the usage amount of the computer. In a call center, for instance, where the computers are run on a 24 hour basis by different shifts, the fragmentation of a computer could take only days. The perfect solution is to set the defrag software to automatically sort out the loose file bits at a regular interval.
At home, the fragmenting process will take longer, but the need for a defrag of the computer system if still very important. Personal defrag software can be set up to scan the system nightly when the computer is not in use. The software will then run only when the computer if fragmented enough to need a quick clean. Defragging a computer system can take anywhere from 2 to 6 hours or more depending on the size of the hard drive and the level of fragmentation.
