You are 6 months into your pregnancy. While your stomach is developing, you observe that those unwanted hairs are turning up too. Geez, you can barely even see your legs, how are you going to shave them? What if you've planned to go for methods such as electrolysis to remove those unsightly hair before your delivery? What are the concerns? And the issues, if there are any?

Here is a summary of 2 common hair removal options and whether you should go for them during your pregnancy. Do be aware that this shouldn't be regarded as medical advice and it's vital you check with your doctors before trying out any of them

Electrolysis Hair Removal & Pregnancy

The only true permanent hair removal option in this list, electrolysis during pregnancy is not recommended. This is because there aren't any safety reports of electrolysis on pregnant ladies and the electric current's impact on the baby. So, most health care providers or electrologists would discourage going for the procedure during pregnancy. However, should you still decide to go for it, avoid the breasts area as much as possible. Especially if you're going to breastfeed your baby or are currently in your last trimester. Hair removal on the tummy should also be omitted if there are only a few weeks more before your delivery as it can be rather uncomfortable for that sensitive area.

There are 3 common types of electrolysis in permanent hair removal namely the Galvanic, Thermolysis and blend techniques. The blend method is essentially a hybrid of the galvanic and thermolysis approaches. While the process is similar across all 3 (in that a small needle is pierced into the hair follicle) the nature of the current sent through, makes the Galvanic method an inappropriate procedure for pregnant women. Why is that so?

Galvanic electrolysis send through a minute flow of electric current through the client and back to the equipment. This makes it dangerous as the foetus contains amniotic fluid which behaves like an electric conductor. The thermolysis electrolysis, on the contrary doesn't get transmited via the body and may be less harmful to both the mother and the baby. In any case, it's advisable to check with your doctor before attempting such treatments. You probably have to anyway. Because most electrologists would require an official authorization from your gynaecologist before proceeding with the treatments.

Laser Hair Removal & Pregnancy

Laser hair removal is one technique that has gained immense popularity over the years. But is it suitable for pregnant patients? Although there are neither reports that elaborates on the risks and safety issues of laser hair removal for pregnant patients nor on the laser's repercussions on the foetus, most health care professionals would not recommend it during your pregnancy. At the end of the day, it's always better safe than sorry.
