A suitable campsite is not an off the peg item. Campsites that will be suitable for some people and some tents, will not be suitable for all. However, there are some basics that you should be aware of before you set up your camp for the night.

A campsite can mean two different things. The first is an organised campsite that people go to camp, which has facilities such as running water, showers, toilets, perhaps washing machines and even a shop. If you are looking for a campsite with these type of facilities then remember the more facilities it has the more people it will attract, so if you are someone who cannot bear the tiniest noise after 10 pm, then try to steer away from the bigger sites. Some very large sites may have a bar or entertainment block, which could be noisy at night. If you love parties and loud noise, then this type of campsite will suit you, but if you dont then dont book into a campsite like this, since you will probably be irritated by the noise.

The second type of campsite that you will come across is a site that you choose to pitch your tent, which is not an organised campsite. This may be in a farmers field or a wide piece of open land. If it is in a field, get the owners permission. Do not assume that you have the right to pitch your tent there: some farmers do not allow camping and get angry when campers assume they have the right to camp on fields.

If you are in the middle of nowhere then it may be quiet but you need to think about accessing water to boil for drinks or washing. If you have supplies of bottled water then fine, but do consider water. You also need to think about being able to use the toilet. If there is a pub nearby this would be handy, but do not ignore the fact that you will need ot go to the toilet at some point!

Dont pitch your tent in a valley or else you could easily be flooded which ruins the whole experience. You should also try to avoid camping immediately adjacent to water such as a river or canal, since there will be more insects here and canals often have rats nearby, so exercise some caution near water.

But so long as you consider the issues above and choose what is right for you and for your needs, then you should have a great experience camping and have a comfortable stay.
