Everyone appreciates the beauty of a pristine, unencumbered view from the comfort of a living room. As aesthetically pleasing as large windows are, they usually waste a great deal of energy and expose your furniture and wood to damaging ultraviolet radiation. Window films have become an increasingly popular way to ensure that big, beautiful windows make sense not only visually, but financially, by blocking out ultraviolet radiation and heat from the sun.

Window tinting films are able to block a great deal of infrared and ultraviolet radiation. Depending on the formulation applied, window films can block anywhere from 9 to 93 percent of incoming visible light, and up to 99 percent of the ultraviolet radiation that can harm fabrics and wood finishes. Window films can also cut as much as 76 percent of the heat transmitted from the sun from entering through the glass. This will not only keep the temperature more steady during the winter, but it will reduce the need for air conditioning as well.

Most modern window films are made with the use of a sputtering process, which bonds metal alloys to the base of the transparent, flexible film. When production is finished, the window film is generally a laminate of coatings and polyester that is bound together by adhesives. Because of the variety of different materials available for use in the production of window films, there are films available in all finishes, applications, and coatings for all different types of glass.

Some manufacturers have been experimenting with a variety of different mineral applications to maximize the efficiency of their window films. Some of the most interesting new materials are the nano-ceramics, which take advantage of the unique light filtering properties of tough, stable ceramic. These advanced solar window films block more than 99 percent of high ultraviolet rays from the sun, the rays most typically responsible for fading and wearing of fabrics and paint. Huper Optik has led the field in these nano-ceramic window films.

There are many manufacturers of high quality window films, including CPFilms Inc., Advanced Solar Technologies, and 3M. Although the basic properties of these products are the same, each manufacturer offers different and unique applications for any window tinting need. Different window films are going to be optimal for different settings, such as auto window films, boat window films, and home and office window films. Make sure to do your research to find the one that best fits your needs.
