In today's market there are many types of web hosting options available. Free or low cost web hosting, Windows-powered servers, shared servers, dedicated servers, and many more. With such a surplus of internet hosting services, sometimes choosing the right one to cost effectively meet your needs can be difficult.

When choosing between shared web hosting servers and a dedicated server, you must know what capabilities your online services will need to properly function. Do you expect to have a high amount of traffic on your website? Will you offer features that require applications to be installed to perform a certain operation or function? What level of database operations will you need to perform? What amount of processor power will you need? What kind of operating system would you need to optimize your web hosting or dedicated servers performance with your data?

Dedicated servers have the advantage of ensuring you will get exclusive use of bandwidth allocation, memory configuration, and disk space. A dedicated server will also prevent the disruption of or damage to your site's data that can result from another user's mistakes which effect the others on the server of a shared web hosting service. A dedicated server also offers you a private IP address, as apposed to having to share one with multiple others on a shared web hosting server.

In shared web hosting, you are actually sharing the server with other website owners, which could result in the possibility of an oversold server, creating overloads and decreased performance and protection. A website with a high volume of traffic would probably see a negative affect on its navigation when using shared web hosting. Dedicated servers, however, offer you full and use of all the available resources exclusively for your web site.

While dedicated servers offer these benefits to those looking for optimal use and protection of their internet hosting server, it does have the drawback of being a higher monthly expense than standard web hosting options. However, some find the ability to control the variations of their server to fit their needs, such as changing global configurations or installing custom developed applications, may be more financially beneficial in the end.

There are also ways to reduce the added costs of using dedicated servers instead of shared web hosting. This could include self managing your dedicated server, or finding someone who can do this for you at a low cost. However, like any other purchase, you should research your options and pick which one best meets your needs, be it a free website on a shared web hosting provider's servers, or the exclusive use of your own dedicated server.
