The word breast cancer does make us shiver with fear. However, you can ensure that this demon stays away from you. All you need to do is some self-exam! Earlier breast self examinations were considered necessary to detect cancer however now they are optional. Now, women have become more conscious about their overall health. This is because of a general awareness that keeps making rounds. Breast self exams helps in knowing the consistency of our breast tissue.

Before you start this, you need to know your breasts! You need to learn the technique to familiarize yourself with your chest as they keep varying in sensitivity and texture during menstrual period or aging.

Remember, not all lumps are cancerous!

How Do Self Exam Help?

Regular checking of your breasts will help you notice any kind of abnormality within no time. For instance, with regular self-exams you will have an idea of how your breasts are when you touch or feel them. Any kind of thickening will soon come to your notice if you have been observing them for some time.

Although we know that most lumps are benign, it is undoubtedly important to be cautious as some can be cancerous. When detected early, you can save yourself with immediate treatment. This is precisely when these self-check-ups come to your aid.

Self Exam Techniques

Here is how you can examine your mammaries! Take a close look at your breasts. Keeping your arms at the sides, look in the mirror for any changes in the shape or size. Go around from one side to another and check for any dimpling or change in the symmetry.

The other two ways of checking are as follows:

* Placing your hands with the palms joined together
* Placing your hands on your hips

Besides the above methods, you can also check your chest while having a bath or by lying down on the bed sans a bra.

There are different techniques used to test such as the clock technique, the wedge pattern and the sweeping method. Another aspect that you need to keep in mind while doing a breast self-exam is that you need to make sure that there isn't any kind of discharge from your nipples. You can do this by softly pinching the nipple with your fingers at a 12 o'clock and 6 o'clock position and then again with your fingers at 3 o'clock and 9 o'clock position.

It is you who knows your body better than anybody else and this is how you can keep unnecessary problems at bay.
