Largely, people are quite ignorant about gold jewelry. Women love gold jewelry and are more taken with the design of the jewelry than with its value. Most women only admire an engagement ring and the diamond in it. If the gold jewelry is a bracelet, a necklace or earrings, it's the design of the jewelry and how it looks that matters. The weight and purity of the gold does not matter. As long as it looks nice and is admired, it's deemed to be a good buy.

The term karat or carat is vaguely understood to mean the purity of gold. But very few people know what 14 karat or 18 karat means. When you try and sell gold jewelry and the jeweler tells you how much they are willing to pay, the price that they quote can be surprising. You are expecting that the gold jewelry will be worth more than what is told. The reason could be that you are ignorant about buying and selling gold.

When you buy gold jewelry, the jeweler will tell you that its 14 karat or 18 karat and its weight. The weight will be stated in penny worth or grams. When you go to sell gold jewelry, the jeweler will examine the piece, check its purity, weigh it, do some calculations and quote a price. You may think that the jeweler is trying to cheat you and you may visit other jewelers. But chances are the same price is what is going to be quoted to you. If you are getting 75% of the price you bought it for, consider yourself lucky.

When you sell gold jewelry the buyer is only interested in the quantity of gold contained in the piece. He is not interested in the design, craftsmanship or which jeweler you bought it from. Gold prices fluctuate daily and vary from city to city and country to country. The difference generally is marginal. When you sell gold jewelry, three things count. The first is the amount of gold in a piece. This is determined by its karat value. Ten karat means the piece contains forty one percent gold. Eighteen karat means seventy five percent.

Most jewelers stamp or engrave the karat value. The renowned jewelers also put their logo or special mark on it. The second factor is the weight of the piece. This is measured in penny worth or grams. The worth of a piece is calculated by multiplying the weight by the price of gold. Remember if the piece is 10 karat it means that forty one percent of the total weight times the price of the gold will be the price you will get.

So when you go to sell gold jewelry you must know how the value is calculated. If you don't, then you will just have to accept what the jeweler tells you. All jewelers don't buy gold jewelry - only some of them do. Pawn shops also buy gold jewelry, but you won't get a very good price from them.
