There are many different styles of instrument clusters. It depends in large part on the kind of car that you have as to which style of instrument panel you have. Some prefer one over the other too and that may influence their decision on what kind of car they buy.

Some panels have a lot of different gauges and red and green lights. These are a sportier look and are generally found in custom cars that you might find at a car show. These types of instrument clusters are considered to be more of a racing style and associated with muscle cars.

Other types of cars have a cluster that has more hidden lights that only come on to indicate a problem. These types of instrument panels typically only have a speedometer and gas gauge. The rest is done through indicator lights.

Yet another, more common style of instrument clusters is the digital ones. These kinds of panels are in a lot of cars today and display a lot of information through a digital display rather than through a more traditional gauge.

A style that is more experimental at this time is the kind that projects the displays out in front of the car so that you can see them as you are looking down the road. This is a good so that you will not have to look down while you are driving to look at the gauges, but there are still some concerns that it will also cause problems. It is also costly.

While it does not really matter what kind of gauges you have in your instrument panel, it is important that you understand how to use the style that you have to keep you informed so that you can take better care of your car.

It is important that you determine how it is best for you to quickly glance at the gauges in your cluster while driving. While you are stopped at a red light you can look at the gauges a little longer to make sure that everything is good. However, some gauges you will need to look at while driving down the road and yet you should not take your eyes away from the road for more than a split second.

A couple of rules that I guide myself by is to never look at the gauges while in rush hour traffic. Chances are that I am not going over the speed limit in that kind of traffic and I cannot afford to look away from the road for even a split second. I also try to make sure that there is no one in front of me for a long ways when I do need to look at the speedometer or gas gauge while driving down the freeway.
